UCAT Test Day Guide 2026
What To Do The Night Before, On The Day, And After Your Exam
UCAT test day can feel like the biggest hurdle of your medical school application.
The truth is that the final 48 hours are not about learning new content.
They are about protecting the score you have already earned.
This guide follows the same protocol we give our own students before their UCAT exam.
Nothing here will increase your score overnight.
It will help you avoid simple mistakes that can cost valuable marks or even stop you from sitting the test.
All test centre information is based on the official UCAT Consortium guidance and was last checked on 3 August 2026.
The Night Before Your UCAT
Stop doing mock exams after 6pm
A mock test the evening before your exam will not improve tomorrow’s score.
A poor result can damage your confidence.
Close your laptop.
Give your brain a chance to recover.
Get your ID ready
Lay out your photo ID before you go to bed.
This is the one thing that can end your test day before it begins.
UK test centres accept:
- A valid passport at any test centre.
- A photo card driving licence only in its country of issue.
If you arrive without accepted ID, you will not be allowed to sit the UCAT.
Your test fee will not be refunded.
Test centre staff cannot make exceptions.
Check your appointment details
Log in to your UCAT account.
Confirm your appointment time.
Check your test centre location.
Take screenshots of both.
If your phone loses signal on the day, you will still have the details you need.
Prioritise sleep
One extra hour of sleep is worth far more than one extra hour of revision.
A well rested brain thinks faster and makes fewer mistakes.
The Morning Of Your UCAT
Eat your normal breakfast
Do not experiment with new foods.
Choose something familiar that you know works for you.
Test day is not the time to take chances.
Arrive early
Aim to arrive around 15 to 30 minutes before your appointment.
Pearson VUE recommends arriving at least 15 minutes early to complete check in.
A little extra time gives you breathing room if public transport is delayed or traffic is heavier than expected.
Keep revision light
Do not start learning anything new.
If you want a final review, limit yourself to one familiar summary sheet.
Your goal is confidence, not cramming.
What Happens During UCAT Check In
Knowing what to expect removes unnecessary stress.
The test centre staff will normally:
- Check your photo ID.
- Take your photograph.
- Ask you to read and agree to the UCAT Test Rules.
- Ask you to store all personal belongings, including electronic devices switched off before they are stored.
- Carry out a routine security check, which may include a visual inspection or a handheld scanner.
These checks are standard for every candidate.
Inside The Test Room
You will receive a laminated noteboard and a pen.
If your pen stops working or you need another noteboard, simply raise your hand and staff will replace it.
The calculator
A basic on screen calculator is available during Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning.
It does not include scientific functions.
This is one reason why strong mental maths can often be quicker than reaching for the calculator.
Ear protection
If noise distracts you, you can bring non electronic ear defenders or earplugs.
Some test centres can also provide earplugs if requested.
Toilet breaks
If you need to leave the room, raise your hand.
Unless you have approved rest breaks, your test timer will continue running while you are out of the room.
If possible, visit the toilet before your exam begins.
Between UCAT Sections
Every section is a fresh start.
A difficult section does not predict how you will perform in the next one.
The cognitive sections are reported on a scaled score between 300 and 900.
Situational Judgement is reported separately using performance bands.
If one section feels harder than expected, do not assume you have performed badly.
Many students leave a section feeling uncertain and still receive an excellent score.
Take a slow breath.
Reset your focus.
Concentrate only on the section in front of you.
After Your UCAT
When you finish the exam, raise your hand.
An invigilator will collect you and provide your printed score report before you leave the test centre.
Your results should also appear in your UCAT account within approximately 24 hours.
You do not need to send your scores to universities yourself.
The UCAT Consortium sends results directly to participating universities in early November.

You will not be allowed to sit the test, your test fee will not be refunded, and you will have to pay again to book a new appointment on another day. Test centre staff have no discretion to make exceptions, so lay your ID out the night before.
Arrive at least 15 minutes early to complete check in. We suggest 15 to 30 minutes so a transport delay does not become a crisis. There is no benefit to arriving an hour early and sitting with your nerves.
No. Food and drink, including water, are not permitted in the testing room unless approved in advance as an access arrangement. Your bottle stays in the locker with your belongings, and if you leave the room for a drink the test timer keeps running, so drink before you go in.

Treat the next section as a fresh start. Sections test different skills, and scores are scaled between 300 and 900, so a section that felt brutal can still score well. Take a slow breath, reset, and concentrate only on the section in front of you.
You receive a printed score report at the test centre before you leave, and your results appear in your UCAT account within approximately 24 hours. The UCAT Consortium sends results to universities directly in early November.
